How to Scrap a Non-Running or Damaged Car in India

Your car doesn't need to start for it to be scrapped legally. Here's what to expect if your vehicle isn't in running condition.

One of the most common questions we receive is: my car won't start — can it still be scrapped? The answer is yes, and at AfterCarz, non-running and heavily damaged vehicles are among the cases we handle regularly.

What Counts as a Non-Running Vehicle?

  • Vehicle that won't start or move under its own power
  • Engine-seized or transmission-failed vehicles
  • Flood-damaged or fire-damaged cars
  • Accident-damaged vehicles, including write-offs
  • Cars with missing major components (wheels, battery, etc.)

How Does Pickup Work for Non-Running Cars?

For vehicles that cannot be driven, AfterCarz coordinates flatbed truck pickup instead of a standard tow. The process is the same logistically — we schedule a time, your car is collected from your location, and transported to the RVSF. The difference is the type of vehicle used for the job. There is no additional charge to you for flatbed vs standard pickup.

Does Condition Affect the Scrap Value?

Yes — but less than most people expect. Since scrap value is primarily based on metal weight, a non-running car in poor mechanical condition typically receives 80–90% of the value a running car of the same model would get. Heavily stripped vehicles (missing doors, bonnet, or major panels) may see a larger reduction. Flood-damaged cars with major corrosion are assessed case-by-case.

Running car100% of base scrap value
Non-running, body intact85–95% of base scrap value
Accident-damaged, body deformed70–85% of base scrap value
Heavily stripped / major corrosionAssessed individually
Get a quote even if your car is in poor condition — the actual value may surprise you. Most non-running vehicles still fetch ₹12,000–₹50,000+ depending on make and weight.

Do You Need the Original RC to Scrap a Non-Running Car?

Yes — the RC (or duplicate RC if the original is lost) is required for the RVSF to process the vehicle legally and issue a Certificate of Deposit. If you've misplaced your RC, you'll need to apply for a duplicate from your RTO before the scrapping can proceed. AfterCarz can guide you through this step.
