How Much Will You Get for Scrapping Your Car in India?

Real numbers, real vehicle types, and how to make sure you're not getting shortchanged when you scrap your car.

The most common question we get at AfterCarz is simple: how much will I actually get? The honest answer is: it depends — but it's not a black box. Scrap value is calculated based on a few clear variables, and knowing them helps you verify that any quote you receive is fair.

How Is Car Scrap Value Calculated?

Scrap value in India is primarily driven by the vehicle's weight, because scrap is ultimately sold as metal. The heavier the car, the more metal it yields, and the higher the payout. Secondary factors include:

  • Curb weight of the vehicle (the single biggest factor)
  • Current scrap metal rates in your city (fluctuate monthly)
  • Condition of the vehicle — running vs non-running
  • Demand for specific spare parts from your model
  • Fuel type — diesel vehicles sometimes carry a marginal premium

Approximate Scrap Values by Vehicle Segment

Hatchback (Maruti Alto, Wagon R)₹15,000 – ₹30,000
Compact sedan (Honda City, Hyundai Verna)₹25,000 – ₹45,000
Mid-size SUV (Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos)₹35,000 – ₹60,000
Full-size SUV (Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra XUV700)₹55,000 – ₹75,000+
Luxury sedans / large vehicles₹70,000+

These figures are for scrap metal value alone. If you're scrapping through an authorised RVSF with a Certificate of Deposit, you additionally unlock manufacturer discounts of 4–6% and road tax rebates of up to 25% on your next vehicle purchase — which can add ₹30,000–₹1,50,000 in real savings depending on the car you buy next.

Does the City Affect the Rate?

Yes. Scrap metal rates vary by city because they're linked to local steel demand, distance from processing plants, and supply of ELVs in the area. Delhi and Mumbai typically offer competitive rates due to high RVSF density. Tier-2 cities may see 5–10% lower per-kg rates but the difference is rarely dramatic on a standard passenger car.

Why Informal Dealers Often Offer Less

Roadside scrap dealers work outside the RVSF system. They can't issue a Certificate of Deposit, so they don't carry the cost of regulated dismantling or legal compliance. This means their overhead is lower — and they often pass some of that back as a slightly higher upfront offer. However, without a CD, you lose all government incentives, and your RC stays in your name. On balance, the RVSF route — especially with the CD-linked incentives — almost always yields more total value.
